Food For Health with Lex and Mais

Food For Health
Raspberries and GreenBeans
Raspberries in Champagne YUMMY!!

Raspberries are such a great summer treat good in anything from salads to yogurts to smoothies.  They are also chock full of vitamins.  Raspberries are really high in Vitamin C and Manganese they are also high in fiber vitamin k magnesium folate omega 3 fats copper vitamin E and Potassium.   Because of those vitamins they are an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory and some new studies suggest that raspberries are reducing obesity and blood sugar and of course raspberries are cancer fighters.

Raspberries go bad pretty quickly when you buy them so if you buy them in bulk you can wash and freeze them., they freeze up nice.   Here's an interesting way to eat raspberries, mix them with a little bit of balsamic vinegar.  It's like an explosion of yummy flavor in your mouth.

Greenbeans are one of our favorite veggies.  They are easy to grow.  You can even grow green beans indoors so you have fresh green beans all year.  All you have to do is plant the bean seed in a pot and put by the window.  Give the bean something to grow up and you can be harvesting green beans all year.

Green beans are good to have around because they are rich in fiber, vitamin A and green beans are antioxidants. There is B-12 in green beans which B vitamins are a great energy boosters.

We've got some great recipes this week.  One is a Danish fruit salad.  We got this recipe off our friends blog Lela Love .  She has all sorts of great recipe ideas, party planning ideas, and all around good stuff.  you can check out her blog at lelaboyd.blogspot.com.

Danish Frugt Salat {Fruit Salad}

Ingredients:
~4-5 cups fresh fruit
{grapes, strawberries, apples, blueberries, raspberries and peaches are my faves}
~1 cup heavy whipping cream
~ 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
~ 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste {I use this one, but any vanilla will work.}
~ 1 bar of dark chocolate {I like Lindt Black Currant and Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Truffle}

Whip up the cream, sugar and vanilla for 3-4 minutes on high--or until it looks
like this.

Roughly chop the chocolate.
Mix it all together and serve immediately. I don't add the raspberries until after it's served--I don't like them mushy.

Green bean Salad

In a large saucepan of boiling salted water, cook 1 pound of trimmed green beans until crisp-tender, 3 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water.
Halve the beans and place in a large bowl. Add:
1/2 cup grape tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and halved
2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped
Coarse salt and ground pepper, to taste
Serve with lemon wedges. Enjoy!

Reasons why you should NOT eat at McDonalds with Lex and Mais

Reasons why you should NOT eat at McDonalds

We both gave up McDonalds a long time ago because we were both educated by many health conscious friends of ours.  We started educating ourselves about not only fast food restaurants but also GMO foods and we realized that we cannot feed these things to ourselves anymore let alone our children.  Lately there has been a lot of hype about what is in McDonalds foods.  We thought we would share some of these disturbing facts so you can make educated decisions on what you put inside your body and more importantly your kids body.  This information mainly outs McDonalds which is the number one fast food chain in the world.  If the number one fast food chain in the world cuts corners and adds chemicals to their food then why wouldn't the rest of the fast food chains be doing the exact same thing?  Not to long ago we heard disturbing news on NPR that the Burger King in the UK just admitted to using horse meat in their burgers. Yea pretty sure eating fast food no matter what chain you choose will be serving up similar products.  BEWARE!!  It's just not good for you so why bother eating it?

Every mouthful of McDonalds meal contains a handful of chemicals that raise 'bad' cholesterol levels, increase diabetes risk, lower immunity, and damage DNA.  In fact fast food contains so many harmful ingredients that I wouldn't even feed it to a pet because it would be cruel.

So what is in these "food products"?  Here are 8 creepy mystery ingredients in fast food

1. Duck feathers and human hair (L-cysteine)
You thought duck feathers sounded bad? How about human hair? These are the two most-common sources for l-cysteine, an amino acid used to condition dough for increased pliability, which facilitates better machine processing. CNN reported that most human-derived L-cysteine comes from Chinese women who help support their families by selling their locks to small chemical-processing plants.

Although originally the primary source for L-cysteine was human hair, many manufacturers seem to have moved away from hair-derived L-cysteine and on to the more-palatable duck feathers. According to Jeanne Yacoubou, MS, research editor for The Vegetarian Resource Group, 80 percent of L-cysteine is now derived from feathers. During her research, McDonald’s told Yacoubou that the L-cysteine used in its Baked Hot Apple Pie, as well as its Wheat Roll and Warm Cinnamon Roll, was of the duck-feather variety. Many other fast-food joints rely on L-cysteine in bakery products as well.

And not to be sensationalist here, the resultant additive is far-removed from its original source — but still. It may be disturbing to many, and importantly, may fly in the face of ethical or religious dietary restrictions.

2. Sand (silicon dioxide)
Avoiding sand in your sandwich at the beach is obvious, avoiding sand in your restaurant-purchased meal may not be so apparent.

Silicon dioxide, also known as silica (also known as sand!), is used to make glass, optical fibers, ceramics and cement. Oh, and chili. Used as an anti-caking agent, it is often added to processed beef and chicken to prevent clumping, and is listed in the ingredient panels for chili from both Wendy’s and Taco Bell. Most experts suggest that it isn’t harmful for consumption, but just know that the ingredient keeping that chili meat nice and non-caking is the also the primary component of diatomaceous earth, commonly used as a natural insecticide.

3. Wood (cellulose)
Processed wood pulp, known as cellulose, is used in everything from cheese to salad dressing, from muffins to strawberry syrup. Food processors use it to thicken and stabilize foods, replace fat and boost fiber content — as well as to minimize reliance on more costly ingredients like oil or flour. Powdered cellulose is produced by cooking virgin wood pulp in chemicals to separate the cellulose, and then purified. Modified versions require extra processing, such as exposure to acid in order to further break down the fiber.

Ironically, with the increase in nutritional awareness has come an increase in the use of cellulose — with the addition of wood pulp, products can boast of less fat and more fiber. Just don’t mind the wood.

McDonald's, Taco Bell, KFC, Sonic, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, Arby’s, Jack in the Box, and many others include cellulose in their repertoire.

4. Silly Putty plastic (dimethylpolysiloxane)
Eight-syllable ingredients make sense for Silly Putty, but French fries? Sure enough, dimethylpolysiloxane, a form of silicone used in cosmetics and Silly Putty, is also found in many a fast-food fried thing. It is the secret ingredient that keeps fryer oil from foaming. McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish and French fries have it, as do Wendy’s Natural-Cut Fries With Sea Salt. In fact, most fast-food items that bathe in a deep-fat fryer are imbued with a hint of dimethylpolysiloxane. Should you be concerned? The World Health Organization found no adverse health effects associated with dimethylpolysiloxane, but come on — what’s wrong with using potatoes, oil, and salt for fries?

5. Petroleum-derived preservatives (TBHQ)
Tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is made from compounds derived from petroleum and finds a home in cosmetic and skincare products, varnish, lacquers and resins — and processed food. McDonald’s, for example, uses it in 18 products ranging from its Fruit and Walnut Salad to Griddle Cakes to McNuggets.

TBHQ was finally approved after many years of pressure from food manufacturers, though with approval, the FDA mandated that the chemical must not exceed 0.02 percent of a food’s oil and fat content. Why would there be a limit? Because five grams would be lethal, while one gram can cause nausea, vomiting, delirium, a sense of suffocation and collapse. (Although you would have to eat more than 11 pounds of McNuggets to reach that level. And if you're willing to eat 11 pounds of McNuggets in one sitting, well...)

6. Soil fertilizer (ammonium sulfate)
Ammonium sulfate is sold by chemical companies to food manufacturers as “yeast food for bread,” and many fast-food companies list the ingredient in their bakery products.

But that’s just its night job; when ammonium sulfate is not moonlighting as a food additive, it performs its main task: as a fertilizer for alkaline soils. Ammonium sulfate also does duty as an agricultural spray adjuvant for water soluble insecticides, herbicides and fungicides.

7. Beetle juices (carminic acid, confectioner's glaze)
Food dyes approved by the FDA include colors synthesized from petroleum derivatives and coal tar, but with all of the negative attention paid to artificial food color, natural dyes are on the rise. Yet some food dyes based on natural ingredients come from things that you may not care to ingest. Meet carminic acid, a commonly used red food coloring that comes from the dried, crushed bodies of female scale insects called cochineal. Variously known as Cochineal, Cochineal Extract, Carmine, Crimson Lake, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470, E120 — it is used in a wide variety of products ranging from some meat, sausages, processed poultry products, marinades, bakery products, toppings, cookies, desserts, icings, pie fillings, jams, preserves, gelatins, juices, drinks, dairy products, sauces and dessert products.

From the same family of the cochineal comes the Lac beetle, which is the source of shellac — as in wood-primer-and-varnish shellac. The female beetle secretes a resin that is scraped from trees in Southeast Asia and Mexico. The resin is collected and processed into a shiny coating to be donned by a variety of foods, including candy, vitamins, pills, tablets, capsules, chocolate and waxed fresh fruit. You won’t find beetle excretions on the ingredients list, however, look for its aliases: Confectioner's Glaze, Resinous Glaze, Shellac, Pharmaceutical Glaze, Pure Food Glaze, Natural Glaze or Lac-Resin.

8. Meat paste-goop (mechanically separated meat)
Mechanically separated meat (MSM) has been produced since the 1960s, but has been enjoying new fame lately courtesy of a photo making the rounds which shows an industrial machine extruding a plump ribbon of pink paste into a box. It is commonly referred to as “pink slime.” Looking more like frosting than pureed meat and bone bits, the FDA defines mechanically separated poultry (MSP) as “a paste-like and batter-like poultry product produced by forcing bones, with attached edible tissue, through a sieve or similar device under high pressure to separate bone from the edible tissue.” Mechanically separated pork is used too, although in 2004 to protect consumers against Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, mechanically separated beef was considered inedible and prohibited for use as human food.

After the meat slurry has been produced, it is sometimes treated with ammonium hydroxide to remove excess bacteria. Ammonium hydroxide is also used as a household cleaner and in fertilizers. Since the resultant meat-bone-muscle-tendon-ammonium-hydroxide goop doesn’t taste much like meat, artificial flavors are added to finish the whole thing off.

Mechanically separated meat is to blame for a number of processed meat products; think hot dogs, salami, bologna, burgers and many a chicken nugget. Fast-food restaurants are known for employing pink slime, although recently McDonald’s made clear that it no longer relies upon it in its burgers.

Generally recognized as safe (GRAS)
These four little words seem to have become the FDA mantra when it comes to food additives; all of the above ingredients, and an expansive array of other chemical additives, have been generally recognized as safe in scientific studies. Taken out of context and looked at individually, maybe a little ammonium sulfate here and a petroleum product there aren’t going to cause quantitative damage to lab animals. But if you were to add up all of the chemical ingredients consumed during a life of a fast-food fueled Western diet, what would that look like? Would it look like an epidemic of obesity, diabetes or cancer?

Although stopping off at a fast food restaurant and getting the kids something quick that will make them quiet down is so convenient, it just really isn't worth the long term health effects.  The rise of diabetes and cancer and other health related issues is proof in the probably made with plastic pudding.  Just say no!  One mom says that she keeps a drawer full of small junky toys similar to the ones they give in happy meals in her cupboard, on the nights she doesn't feel like cooking she makes up some easy sandwiches with juice and takes out one of the toys from the cupboard.  Boom homemade happy meal.

Here's our favorite sandwich maker.  It doesn't get any easier than this.  You probably remember these from when you were a kid.  We loved them then, the kids love them now.  Just put some bread and whatever you like in the middle.  It takes about 4 minutes total to cook and the kids LOVE THEM way more than a nasty ol' WackDonalds Cheeseburger.  It Saves you money and keeps you and your kids cancer free!

This Elite Cuisine Non Stick Sandwich Maker is only $16.00 at Target.

What I am

What I see in my inner self is a mermaid fairy ninja
I make the grass grow and I keep the tide low
I help the animals that are in danger
I tell the dolphins to control their anger
What I do is make life and try not to hide
I don't worry about stayin' alive.
The flowers need help blooming
and the coral needs its grooming
So now you know what I am but your something too
go in a different world and discover something new

Three Bees On Their Knees

I'm sitting in the trees
Looking at three bees
on their knees
the trees are so high they're in a cloud
can't see the ground
or hear a sound
all I can see is the bees
on their knees
flapping their wings, singing
when I got down
I missed their lovely sounds

The Best Crew

We're just a bunch of ninja fairys
Writing rhymes, killing time
creating vibes that help you realize
the goodness in life
Nobody can mess with us
'Cause we got a bond so tough
and a strut so Krunk
We keep it real, ya feel?
We create life itself
We got a million books on our family bookshelf
With all the imagination we have
the fun is everlasting
Party crashing 'til we die
All my love goes out to these guys

One Wish

If I had one wish - it would be for you to feel the love in my heart
just for a moment, for this second might just turn into forever
Without you there would be no I - and yet I think I have yet to repay you
It isn't enough to say sweet intentions - whispered like sweet nothings
I must stand up for you, you are all of our treasure
The playing ground of creation - brought upon by mental vibrations
The canvas to my life's final master piece
I must cherish you, feed your body, and nourish your offspring
This is a gift to me not an endeavor
I am your protector and your receiver
Give to me the knowledge your ancient roots hold
So I can put them into the world with devout pleasure
Through self reflection, selfless action, righteous decision, and mental preservation
the light will be tuned to my being beyond measure
this is my wish to place a kiss gently on the lips of Mother Earth
so she is aware of her worth - turning a lovely second into a joyous forever

Lighten Up Book Club with Lex

Lighten Up Book Club With Lex
The ElvenBane by Andre Norton And Mercedes Lackey

Lately I have been really into fantasy and this book blew my imaginations mind.  There are two books in this series.  The second one is called Elvenblood and it is good and worth the read but the first one is AMAZING!  It is about a world of magical elves who have great magical powers and with those powers they rule most of the world they use humans as slaves and they treat the humans really badly.  The humans have magical powers of their own but unfortunately the elves keep a magical collar around their neck so they never know of their own powers.  When a human and an elf come together and make a child they make a wizard, a half human half elven person is very powerful and a group of wizards got together and made a war with the elves called the wizard war.  Sadly the elves played dirty and they won the wizards in the war and so the wizards stay in hiding deep in the forest.  The stories main character is about a girl named Shana who is a wizard.  Her mother got pregnant with her and the Elven lord that she belonged to kicked her out of his palace and into the desert.  Shanas mother stumbled upon a Shaman dragon named Alara.  Shanas mother gave birth to her unknowing that the dragon was there watching.  Shanas mother died and Alara decided to take her back to her lair and raise her amongst the dragons and that is where the adventure of this book really takes off.  Elves, wizards, dragons Oh My!  This book is definitely worth the read.  It really takes your mind on a fun suspenseful adventure.  I recommend it!!

Balancing the Throat and Third Eye Chakra with Lex and Mais

Far Out: Throat Chakra and the Third Eye Chakra

Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is located at the throat the color for this chakra is Blue.  The Throat chakra is about self-expression and talking. When it is open, you have no problems expressing yourself.

When this chakra is under-active, you tend not to speak much, and you probably are introverted and shy. Not speaking the truth may block this chakra.

If this chakra is over-active, you tend to speak too much, usually to domineer and keep people at a distance. You're a bad listener if this is the case.

Here are some ways to balance this chakra.  Singing is a great way to balance the throat chakra, try putting the color blue in your life by wearing some blue clothing.  aromatherapy is a great way to help balance the throat chakra lavender, eucalyptus and frankincense are a couple of good suggestions. Gems help to balance that chakra such as topaz and turquoise.  And as always there is a yoga posture that can help balance the throat chakra.  While doing the pose of choice try and focus on the throat chakra and the color blue.

Now I am no yoga guru but I have been to my fair share of yoga classes.  I am sure I am not doing the poses perfectly but you get the idea.  It's fun so why not give it a try?  There are a couple different levels to the throat chakra pose so choose the one that works best for you and then as you get stronger move up a level -Lex

First level Pose

Second Level

If you are feeling froggy try this one

Grand Finale

Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is located in between your eyes.  the color is indigo in the auric field.  The Third Eye chakra is about insight and visualization. When it is open, you have a good intuition. You may tend to fantasize.

If it is under-active, you're not very good at thinking for yourself, and you may tend to rely on authorities. You may be rigid in your thinking, relying on beliefs too much. You might even get confused easily.  If this chakra is over-active, you may live in a world of fantasy too much. In excessive cases hallucinations are possible.

To balance this chakra try keeping a dream journal,  Sit or lie down with your spine straight and visualize the color indigo in the third eye, wear the color indigo, decorate a room with the color indigo, wear some indigo jewelry, use the brow chakra essential oils jasmine and vanilla, take time out to draw, Go star gazing, take time to sit and day dream.

Try visualizing the color indigo in the place of the third eye chakra.  In yoga there is a practice called Pranayama, it is alternate nostril breathing.  Use right thumb to close off right nostril,  Inhale slowly through left nostril Pause for a second, Now close left nostril with ring finger and release thumb off right nostril Exhale through your right nostril Now, inhale through right nostril Pause, Use thumb to close of right nostril  Breathe out through left nostril  You will feel energy in the third eye when you do it.  Try it you'll see!
